What Do You Want to Get in Writing?

A Short Story

For more than 40 years...I have done a lot of writing.

As an Army officer, documentation specialist, photographer, teacher, instructional technologist, truck driver, assistant principal, principal, and school superintendent, there was always something that needed to be written–so I wrote it.

My formal education includes: two Bachelor's degrees, one in History and one in Political Science, from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master's degree in Education, from the University of Tennessee, and a Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

In my 62 years (so far) on the planet, I have changed residences 26 times, including homes in (chronologically): Michigan, California (twice), Minnesota, Kentucky (twice), Texas (four times), Regensburg, Germany, Tennessee, North Carolina, Yoshkar-Ola, Russia, and Montana.

I can never say no to a road-trip and that has led me to visit every state in the lower 48, as well as, Austria, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Poland, and Russia.

I have done a lot of writing, reading, and research–along the way. As a/an:

• Army Officer - I wrote training and technical documentation, trained soldiers, and made numerous presentations–before there were personal computers, the Internet, and PowerPoint.

• Documentation Specialist - I wrote policy and procedure manuals, reports, newsletters, and training manuals–before there was Word, PageMaker, or Publisher.

• Teacher - I developed and delivered instructional and academic material on a daily basis–before computers and the Internet became an ubiquitous part of classroom instruction.

• Instructional Technologist - I wrote policies and procedures for the nuclear industry–using WordPerfect and the first version of Word.

• Graduate Assistant - I developed the first webpage for the Center for International Education, at the University of Tennessee–using the first version of HTML.

• Truck Driver - I read, a lot.

• Assistant Principal, Principal, and School District Superintendent - I wrote instruction, curriculum, evaluations, job descriptions, memorandum, reports, school and district policies, procedures, white papers, case studies, organizational charts, emergency response plans, student handbooks, teacher handbooks, professional development materials, newspaper articles, a dissertation, delivered instruction and presentations, and identified, captured, and documented knowledge assets for a variety of organizations and institutions.

In my various incarnations as a writer, I have learned to use: six versions of WordPerfect, ten versions of Word, several iterations of PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel, Access, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker, FrontPage, SPSS, and NVivo. I have used both PC and Mac.

My interests, skills, talents, capacities, and accomplishments are many and varied. I have engaged in many occupations, lived in–and traveled to–a lot of places, written thousands of pages–on hundreds of topics, and read thousands of pages–of both fiction and nonfiction.

I am an accomplished writer, an impeccable researcher, a voracious reader, and now, I would like to put my talents, skills, and abilities to work for you as a writer.
